Biologist | Educator | Innovation Leader

Karla B. Schallies, M.Ed., Ph.D.

I bring together biology, education, computer science, and healthcare innovation to design learning experiences, research tools, and interdisciplinary solutions that connect science, technology, and people.

About Me

My strength is not only in learning new fields, but in building bridges between them

I am an interdisciplinary scientist, educator, technology professional, and operations leader with experience across biology, healthcare, computer science, artificial intelligence, academic leadership, and industry operations

My professional journey began in the health sciences when I studied dentistry and then expanded into the natural sciences, where I developed a strong foundation in molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry, biomedical research, and teaching

Over the years, my work in higher education has allowed me to teach and mentor students, design meaningful learning experiences, coordinate laboratory instruction, and translate complex scientific concepts into clear, accessible knowledge

As technology became increasingly central to science, healthcare, and education, I expanded my training into computer science and, more recently, artificial intelligence. This transition was not a departure from my background in the natural sciences, but a natural extension of it. I wanted to understand how computational tools, data visualization, and software systems could be used to solve real problems in biology, medicine, education, and healthcare innovation

Today, my work sits at the intersection of science, education, technology, operations, and leadership. I bring a unique combination of deep scientific training, years of teaching experience, technical skills in computer science, and practical experience in healthcare innovation, industry operations, and organizational management. This allows me to approach problems from multiple perspectives: as a scientist, as an educator, as a technologist, as an operations leader, and as a bridge between academic and industry environments

As a Latina woman in science and technology, I bring a multicultural perspective shaped by resilience, adaptability, and lived experience. I see diversity as a source of growth, creativity, and connection. This perspective helps me think outside the box when solving problems, bridge disciplines, and support different learning profiles in ways that are practical, natural, and effective.

I am especially interested in projects that connect disciplines, improve learning, support healthcare innovation, and use technology ethically and responsibly to make complex systems more understandable and useful
